The present building, the third to house the National Gallery, was designed by William Wilkins from 1832–8. The National Gallery of Art is a national art museum, located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The National Gallery of Art has one of the finest art collections in the world.
The National Gallery in London is home to one of the greatest collections of western European painting in the world. More than 2300 paintings embrace the years between 1250 and 1900. One section of the Gallery called Puzzling Pictures contains pictures with some aspect of history or unusual subject that raises questions. Pictures can give clues to the culture and decorative arts of the time as well as to the inventions of the period. The first paintings in the National Gallery collection came from the banker and collector John Julius Angerstein. The National Gallery is a must see for art students and a mecca for lovers of western European painting.
The current gallery has been expanded significantly since it's foundation, in fact, only the facade onto Trafalgar Square remains as it did in 1838. Several additions have been made to the building including the Sainsbury wing, which was built in 1991 to house the collection of Renaissance paintings.
